WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center has received five awards through the Fall/Winter 2005 World Wide Web Health Awards. This semiannual program recognizes the best health information Web sites for consumers and professionals.

In the Patient Education class, the Medical Center received a gold award for its overall medical center Web site, http://www1.wfubmc.edu, a bronze for its Comprehensive Cancer Center Web site, http://www1.wfubmc.edu/cancer, and a merit award for its Center for Reproductive Medicine Web site, http://www1.wfubmc.edu/ivf.

In the Health Promotion/Disease & Injury Prevention Information class, the Medical Center received two merit awards for the BestHealth Web site http://www.besthealth.com.

“This is a great honor,” said Jan Strohl, senior marketing manager, e-business, for Wake Forest Baptist. “The World Wide Web Health Awards is the largest and most prestigious awards program for healthcare Web sites.”

The Web sites were rated by how effectively they delivered health information to their target markets, graphic design quality, and overall quality and effectiveness.

Web sites are an effective way to attract new customers but creating a site is only the first step. It does little good to have a site if no one can find it on the search engines. Our services include search engine optimization for the four major search engines that conduct >85% of Internet searches. Web pages must be structured properly and target the correct key terms. Submitting a site to the search engines will likely have no effect on your rankings if the Web pages are not optimized.

Ignore the spam mail that promises submission to over 300 search engines as there are only four that are important. Also, do not trust anyone who guarantees they will achieve number one ranking for your pages, unless you plan to purchase search terms through Overture.

No one can honestly guarantee position, especially in highly competitive markets. We are usually successful at achieving high page rankings because we identify important search terms, that others have ignored, and individually analyze each page for optimal placement.

Our Web customers report numerous new visitors to their businesses as a result of their sites. This is because we pay careful attention to how we structure and optimize their pages. When we host a site detailed monthly traffic reports are provided to our clients.

Web sites are no longer just "a nice to have" they are a "must have". Sites have surpassed the roll of the Yellow Pages, fortunately at much less cost. There is no limitation on space, colors, format, etc. No one would argue that a Yellow Page listing does not generate customers and the same applies to a Web site.

When reviewing our Web sites notice the depth of information, which often exceeds 50 pages of text. In addition to constructing the site and graphics, we often compose the copy. This is important because the copy will influence the search engine ranking of each page. It also saves your staff a tremendous amount of very valuable time.

You will also know how much the site will cost before work begins. Unlike many other companies who claim Internet expertise, our Webmaster iscertified by CIW, I-NET +, and Microsoft (MCP). These certifications require classroom training and proficiency examinations.
